Troika

Overview

If you ever find yourself driving through Kitakami in Iwate Prefecture, make sure you set your GPS to Troika at 16-55-1 Kamiezuriko, Kitakami, Iwate 024-0071, Japan. I still remember my first visit there after a long day exploring the countryside. The exterior feels modest and welcoming, but once you step inside, the warm lighting and comforting aroma instantly tell you that this place takes its food seriously.

Troika is widely known for its Russian-inspired cuisine, which might surprise you in northern Japan. In fact, it’s often mentioned in local and national reviews for serving one of the most authentic borscht dishes in the region. According to various Japanese gourmet rankings and food review platforms, the restaurant consistently scores high for flavor and consistency. When I ordered the borscht, I wasn’t expecting much beyond a hearty soup. What arrived at the table, though, was a beautifully balanced bowl-deep red, rich with slow-simmered beef, cabbage, and root vegetables. The broth had that unmistakable sweet-earthy depth that only comes from careful, patient cooking.

The menu goes beyond soup, of course. Their piroshki are golden and crisp on the outside, stuffed with savory fillings that taste freshly prepared rather than mass-produced. I once asked a staff member about their preparation process, and she explained that the fillings are made in-house daily, using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. That commitment to freshness is noticeable. Even the texture of the dough reflects careful proofing and frying techniques. Food science research from culinary institutes often highlights how fermentation and dough resting directly influence flavor development, and Troika clearly applies those principles well.

Another standout is their baked cheesecake, which has gained almost legendary status in Kitakami. It’s dense yet creamy, with a caramelized top that adds a slight bitterness to balance the sweetness. I’ve read multiple customer reviews claiming people drive from neighboring cities just to buy a whole cake to take home. After tasting it myself, I understood why. The baking method seems precise-likely a controlled low-temperature bake to maintain that smooth, velvety interior without cracks. That level of technical execution doesn’t happen by accident.

What makes Troika special isn’t just the dishes themselves but the experience around them. The staff are attentive without being intrusive. During my visits, they took the time to explain menu items to first-timers who weren’t familiar with Russian cuisine. That small gesture builds trust and helps diners feel comfortable trying something new. In the restaurant industry, hospitality research from organizations like the National Restaurant Association consistently emphasizes that service quality is as important as food quality for repeat business. Troika appears to understand this balance intuitively.

The location in Kamiezuriko also adds to its charm. Kitakami is known for its seasonal beauty, especially during cherry blossom season, and stopping by Troika after sightseeing feels like the perfect reward. Parking is convenient, and the space inside accommodates both small groups and families. It’s not overly large, so peak hours can mean a short wait, especially on weekends. That’s perhaps the only limitation to keep in mind.

From my personal experience, consistency stands out the most. I’ve visited more than once over the years, and the flavors have remained steady. In the restaurant world, maintaining that level of quality control is challenging. It requires disciplined kitchen management, standardized recipes, and skilled chefs who understand timing and temperature. Troika delivers on all three.

In a town filled with local eateries and casual diners, Troika holds its own by offering something distinct. The blend of Russian culinary tradition with Japanese attention to detail creates a dining experience that feels both comforting and unique. Whether you’re scanning online reviews, browsing the menu for something different, or simply looking for a memorable meal in Kitakami, this restaurant earns its reputation one carefully prepared plate at a time.

My friend and I came here looking to try the Russian cuisine, but found out that the cafe part of the restaurant closes at 15:00. However, we got baked cheesecake to-go and it was one of the best I’ve ever had, if not the best! ଘ(੭*ˊᵕˋ)੭* ̀ˋ We’ll be back again soon to try the food soon!~ Thank you to everyone who reviewed the baked cheesecake! (Yes, we ate them in the car )

The cheesecake is tiny, expensive, and probably the best cheesecake I've ever had.
